How 1099 Team Driving Works

American Miles team drivers are 1099 independent contractors who drive company-owned trucks. What that means for your taxes, and how your pay is made up.

Team drivers at American Miles work as 1099 independent contractors and drive trucks the company owns. You don't buy, lease or pay for the truck.

1099 vs. W-2

A W-2 employer takes taxes out of every paycheck. As a 1099 contractor you're paid in full and handle your own taxes, usually with quarterly estimated payments. Many drivers put part of each settlement aside for them. A tax professional can tell you what applies in your situation.

How pay is made up

Pay depends on your miles and experience. Recruiting will go through each part with you:

  • Mileage pay
  • Ring pay
  • Detention pay
  • Safe and on-time bonuses

A team truck is moving for most of the day, so teams usually run more miles than solo drivers.

What you need

  • CDL-A
  • 23 or older
  • Clean driving record (MVR)
  • Valid DOT medical card
  • Valid Social Security number
