How Our 24/7 Dispatch Keeps Freight Moving

Freight doesn't stop at 5 p.m., and neither does our dispatch. See how the American Miles team plans, tracks and solves problems around the clock.

American Miles runs dispatch around the clock: a real person answers at 213-943-3006, day or night. Time-critical freight doesn't keep business hours. A production line can go down at midnight, and a truck can hit weather on a Sunday. That's why the American Miles dispatch team never clocks out.

What does dispatch do?

  • Matches trucks to loads. Dispatch assigns the right driver and equipment to each shipment.
  • Plans the route. Planners account for distance, delivery windows and drivers' hours of service.
  • Tracks every load. The team follows each shipment from pickup to delivery.
  • Solves problems fast. When something changes, such as a delay, a road closure or a new appointment time, dispatch reroutes and keeps the customer informed.
  • Supports drivers. Drivers have a real person to call at any hour.

How does dispatch work with team drivers?

Our team drivers run 5–7 day loops, two drivers per truck, taking turns at the wheel so one rests while the truck keeps rolling. Dispatch plans each load around both drivers' hours of service, the delivery appointment and the change of drivers, so the truck keeps moving within the rules. When a load changes overnight, the driver on duty calls dispatch and gets an answer then, not the next morning.

What can drivers call dispatch about?

Anything that affects the load or the driver's day. The most common calls are:

  • Load changes: a new pickup or delivery time, a different dock, or a shipper running late.
  • Breakdowns and repairs: a warning light, a flat or anything that makes the truck unsafe to drive.
  • Weather and road closures: whether to wait it out or take another route.
  • Hours-of-service planning: where the team can swap drivers or take a required break before the clock runs out.
  • Parking and stops: where to park, fuel or rest along the way.

No call is too small. A quick answer at 2 a.m. keeps a small problem from turning into a missed delivery.

What happens when something goes wrong?

Plans change: a shipper moves an appointment, weather closes a pass, or a pickup runs late. Dispatch reworks the plan with the driver, finds the next legal place to stop or swap, and keeps the customer updated on the new arrival time. The goal is simple: the freight arrives when promised, and nobody on the road is left waiting for an answer.

Why does it matter to shippers?

When a shipment can't wait, you need someone who answers. Round-the-clock dispatch means your freight never waits for business hours, and you get answers when you need them.

Why does it matter to drivers?

Drivers on the road at 2 a.m. need support at 2 a.m. Our dispatch team is there for them at every hour.

Shippers can send us a message, and drivers can apply to drive. Either way, dispatch answers at 213-943-3006, any hour.
